Fyi. iPad isn’t 4K and can only play 4K video to a 4 k monitor or tv. Ok. Carry on. (Which is why many want a 4K oled iPad but many have drank the it’s too expensive for apple koolaid).

It also depends on the distance between you and the screen. The further you move away the harder it becomes to make out the difference.

True.

Depending on the bitrate of the video I can easily tell between 720P and 1080P. The panels nice enough that if the video was encoded badly I can tell between two 1080P files.

4K video is going to look incredible, even though your resolution of an iPad may not match the 4K video. The 4K resolution will be packed in to a smaller resolution with a lot of pixel density it will look incredible for sure.

1080P is around 16.7million colors.

4K is over a billion colors.

Even the 11-inch has a much higher screen resolution than 1920 x 1080* so anything at higher resolution is going to look better on the iPad Pro.

  • 2388-by-1668-pixel resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)

iPad Pro cannot play 4K video on itself, but it can play on an external monitor ?

No, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2160p(uhd), 2160p(4k)
All can have either 16.7m or billions of colours.
Resolution is not linked to bit depth

Any true 8 bit 4k monitor will produce over 1billion colors. Not to many 6bit 4K monitors out there, that would be the only reason 4k will produce 16.7 million colors.

Yep wowzers. It looks nice too. Make sure it’s 8 bit though, or you’ve only got 16.7 million colors

We'll yeah... Except 8bit is 16.7 million colours.
Which is 256 different shades per colour channel so 256x256x256 = roughly 16.7 million shades.

What you're thinking of is 10bit which is 1024 different shades per channel giving you just over 1.07 billion different shades.
10bit is currently marketed as HDR or (HDR10) So called because it's HDR 10bit.
But you can get 4k displays that aren't HDR, in fact you can get many non HDR 4k panels, likewise you can get 1080p videos in HDR10, giving the full 1.07billion colours to 1080p too.

Btw, I've never seen a 6bit digital display, well not this millennium anyway.
