Hi,

I'm wondering if you can output to multiple Airplay speakers from the iOS 10 Music app using Home Sharing? I don't think you can but then I'm left wondering why you can do it with the Remote app (I much prefer the modern design of Music instead of 'stuck in the past' Remote).

Thanks.

EDIT: Got it sussed, no you can't. I'm guessing it's because the processor is too slow in an iOS device. I have seen Airfoil, but because you can't do it without getting up to configure your Mac instead of getting it all done on the iOS device I don't really see the point.

The reason you can do it in the Remote app is because iTunes supports multiple AirPlay devices and the stream is coming from the Mac you're remote-controlling.

With an always running mac, Airfoil and airfoil satellite, you can pretty much do it all from your iPhone.

Or with just a Mac and an Airport Express or ATV.

Been a while since I've checked, but isn't it only iTunes on desktop that supports selecting multiple airplay sources? I didn't think other Mac apps supported that, without the help of something like Airfoil.

Also, OP wants to their iOS device

You can use the iOS Remote App to select devices and control the music. The only caveat is the iTunes must be the source.

Ok. I knew there was some limitation there somewhere.

So the OP has options. iTunes, or Airfoil + Satellite for everything.

Sorry as this is a bit of an old thread - obviously you will be able to this with AirPlay 2 speakers - but I have been playing multiroom AirPlay natively from my iPhone and iPad for a couple of years now using a 3rd party app WHAALE. I upgraded my iPad to iOS 11 last night and didn't notice anything re AirPlay 2 i.e. No option to select multiple devices natively, but WHAALE still worked multiroom from the iPAd which was a concern in case iOS 11 broke that for current AirPlay 1 devices

Day to day I use WHAALE to play music from/ via my iPhone - where the music is on the device itself, a NAS/media server, and Internet radio. It doesn't support dreaming services such as Apple Music, play, amazonetc though think there was mention of a workaround for Spotify at one point. Also you have to use the app itself, so you can't use the Music app. AirPlay devices turn on when selected and volume can be controlled individually. I have 5 devices and it works well - all speakers are wired to my home network rather than wifi
