I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 15" base model. I have no issues with it and it is running just fine. The only complaint I have is that the fingerprint sensor gets smudges on it. I know it sounds petty but it gets really bad no matter how clean I keep my fingers.

Is there a solution besides constantly wiping it?

Nobody is going to know if the fingerprint sensor can function through scotch tape, but there's really nothing stopping you from trying that out yourself is there? Although wouldn't a piece of tape look worse than the touch ID button on its own?

Being a bit blunt here, but if you think about it for a while, there really is no solution to this other than to just get over it.

Anything you put on it that would be transparent enough to not disable the sensor will probably show smudges. Maybe use some hand sanitizer before you touch it? Alcohol might dry up your skin enough to lessen the smudging, but it most likely won't entirely eliminate it.

I suggest that if you want to experiment you put a small piece of Scotch on your finger and see if is works rather than on the sensor. You have no idea if taking it off afterwards will damage the surface. I doubt it but I wouldn't take a chance myself.
I think it's highly unlikely.

Come on. Every single thing you touch all day every day is going to pick up oils from your skin unless you JUST washed your hands with dish soap or something. This is not something to obsess over, and nobody will judge you for having a fingerprint smudge on your FINGERPRINT READER. Stop worrying and use the computer.
