I ordered a MBP for my dad, he would prefer to wait for a future Mac Pro. The MBP does not arrive for another 4-5 weeks. Will he be able to return it for store credit? I would rather not cancel the order as my other sibling contributed to the purchase and paid me separately already.

Apple has a pretty generous return policy, here is a link to read it. You have 14 days to get a refund and of course have to return everything you received.

That said, I think your wait for a future Mac Pro could be a long one.

If the order isn't for "another 4-5 weeks", why not just cancel it?

To answer your question they would not give you store credit but most likely refund the method of purchase. You could talk with an Apple customer service rep and see if they would make an exception but I think it is an automatic process.

If you wait and return it will be the same as cancelling the order as far as your refund is concerned. I think it would be wasteful and unwise to wait and return when your Dad has no intention of keeping the device.

What does your Dad do that he needs a MacPro? Also a Mac Pro is most likely going to cost more than a MBP 14/16" depending on the configuration of course.

I am pretty sure he would be fine with the MBP but if he prefers desktop machines then maybe a Mac mini Pro might suffice??

If it doesn't arrive for 4-5 more weeks, you should not have been charged. So you still have your sibling's $$$ and you don't want to give them the $ back because it's a shared gift. Is that correct?

You can cancel the order and buy your dad a gift card yourself since you haven't been charged and there is no refund coming from Apple. You can buy gift cards up to $2000 so if needed, you can get 2 to make the total cost.

Way more. A configuration offering significant performance improvements over a MBP is easily ~$10K, and could cost multiples of that. We will have to see what the cost of a "mini" or other smaller MacPro is going to be, but I would guess for a decent configuration you will be in the 6 digit range.
