I'd like to run the Apple Hardware Test on my Mid 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it doesn't work. I have a Radeon HD 580 Pulse, that's one of those cards that's not initially made for this Mac and where you have no Boot screen when you use it.

Is that the reason I can't run the AHT?

AHT and the non EFI version of ASD are both based on trimmed down and specialised install of Snow Leopard. A RX 580 only works after Sierra 10.12.6, so, no, you can't run AHT/ASD with a RX 580. You need one of the AppleOEM GPUs to run AHT/ASD.

There is a caveat to the above statement, if you have a flashed RX 580, the macEFI from the flashed GPU can allow to you partially run ASD/AHT tests via the GPU unaccelerated fallback EFI drivers, but you then wouldn't complete AHT or ASD, since when the GPU is checked the test fail/abort.

Thanks so much!

This has probably been covered elsewhere, but it might be helpful to surface it here in case anyone comes upon this answer in a search; can you leave the RX580 in slot 1, and install a GT120 in one of your other slots to run AHT/ASD, or is the mere presence of the RX580 going to freak out / invalidate the Snow Leopard based system?

Never tested this myself since this specific config does not make any sense for the tests that AHT/ASD do, AHT/ASD test the factory configuration or a possible factory configuration (like X5690 + 128GB of RAM that was never offered as a factory model), but from the Snow Leopard standpoint the AMD RX 580 is just a PCIe card installed without drivers to make it work and is ignored as a GPU.

If AHT/ASD have any problems with this specific config, only testing it will answer.
