I was thinking of quite a few custom uses for this device, but I would like to know if you can stand up and use it, comfortably. (LOL, there's the rub. What's 'comfortable' to one might not be to another.)

Every time they used the device at the presentation yesterday, they made a point to go over and sit in the chair or have it sitting on a podium for demos. A device similar to this, with a custom inventory app would be almost perfect for some implementations I can think of.

Prime example. We looked into tracking our Artwork inventory at our company (we have thousands of pieces of artwork that we keep track of in an inventory system.) with either barcodes or RFID on the art. The windows mobile based handheld units and Symbol stuff just sucked in terms of customization and was rediculously priced.

If this device could be carried around in any sort of manner, we might really have something here.

I need to get one in my hands to see what it feels like and how it feels being carried around.

I am thinking that the dev community will definitely find some uses for this thing that will make it a BETTER solution than a smartphone or a laptop.

I don't think it could be used standing too easily. But, I don't think it's intended for standing use (just like a notebook or desktop computer aren't). I think the only time I could ever want to use something this large would be sitting. If I'm standing, I'm most likely doing something lol not browsing facebook on my tablet..unless you like to just stand around in empty rooms lol...I mean you could place it on a counter and use it standing..but I don't think it's important

I was thinking of an implementation where the user is standing because they were taking inventory, and using the IPad as the input device for the data, either manually, or with RFID. (maybe a custom accessory, or barcode scanner, etc.)

You might be right in that it could be 'too large' for this kind of usage.

To Be or not to Be! (a smartphone or a laptop?)

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous netbooks,
Or to take fingers against a pane of glass, and by touching, end them?

:D

I memorized that soliloquy and acted it out for my AP Lit class.

of course you can use it standing up...the only reason they were sitting down to demo it is because they were pushing the leisure-ness of it...and what their target audience is...you know how Jobs and Schiller stands up to use a desktop during an iMac demo? You don't use your iMac standing up, right? It's just something they thought of to try to get their point across...

Sure, I see what you are saying. I guess I really need to hold one in my hands to see if it fits the bill for this kind of implementation. (Standing up taking inventory of items with it as the input device.)

I can think of two ways:

1. Holding it between the thumb and fingers of one hand, then using the other hand to operate it.

2. Holding it between your elbow and wrist/hand, then using the other hand to operate it.

Of course, no one can tell if any of these are practical at all before they've tried one, but assuming these are possible, it could also be used while walking. That is true mobility! :D

I'm guessing their will be a case built with some sort of grip/handle or whatever on the back to make it easy to hang on to with one hand. I can see using this standing up way more then I would ever try to use a 13 or 15" MBP. It's been done, but at 4 or 5 lbs vs 1.5 lb.. both will get heavy after while.

It could be held like a clipboard is, with one hand coming around the back and holding onto one side. the other hand can type. you have to chose each key by chicken pecking, but it still works

Why even ask this question? Think about it for two seconds and you have your answer. If you have an app that uses a single hand based interface then yes. if you have an app that requires two hands then no.

Sooo if you want to use it for inventory logging or other such tasks then design your apps with a single hand interface...

Hmmm....I wonder what will get dropped and destroyed more often, an iPhone or an iPad?? (I'm betting on the iPad)

I think it will, I have a 1.3kg weight at home I use (bicep curls), the iPad is half that... 680g, I imagine it would be very easy to hold this with one hand, and input data with the other. I think the sitting, was just so the guys using it didn't look so awkward lol.

You are wrong. To use single handed interface one would have to have three hands. This thing is too big to hold it in one hand comfortably.

And yet they did a little bit awkward. I think that to use the device one has to not only sit but also cross the legs (like Jobs did) to use one leg as a support. It's hard to imagine anyone sitting straight and using iPad for more than 3 minutes. Unless you have really long legs if iPad is on your laps the head should be angled to look down and the neck will be in pain in no time. The laptops have a big advantage here because their screens stick further away.

Because you have used it, right?

I can hold my Kindle DX in one hand, which is an inch taller than the iPad.
