I am going to restore 3GS to factory settings but iTunes only gives an option to iOS 6 so is there any way to get iOS 5.1.1?

Manually Update to Ios5.11

yes there is a way you can manually update to IOS 5.11 its easy and you need not to do a lot of work for that..Launch the Settings app
Tap General
Tap Software Update
If there’s nothing new, you’ll be told just so. Otherwise, you’ll be presented with all the details about the update.
Tap Download and Install

If you are a developer, you can download iOS 5.1.1 to your computer, then restore ur phone with it, by option + left click

If you have full 'blobs" for 5.1.1 you can otherwise no, check the hacks section for numerous threads on this.

Out of date info. Only IOS 6 will be offered. Apparently Apple is still signing 5.1.1 installation providing you downloaded it on a computer and manually install via itunes

No. Apple stopped signing 5.1.1 completely and totally on September 22nd.

Where do you get this idea from? Pretty sure no. Developer devices don't get any sort of special treatment when it comes to iOS downgrades.

OK, so can someone clarify this for me please? I've just bought a 4S locked to Orange in the UK. It came with iOS 5.0.1 preinstalled, and I'd like to upgrade this to 5.1.1 (as I have on my old 3GS). I'm not ready for iOS 6 yet (the Maps issue, mainly), although it is showing as an available update on the phone at present.

Will I not be able to upgrade? I have downloaded the .ipsw for 5.1.1, but have absolutely no idea about all these blobs everyone keeps talking about! My phone has been backed up on my Mac from within iTunes, and I can / will back up again before trying anything. Am I going to run into problems trying to upgrade? What is this issue of "signing" that is being discussed?

With blobs or SHSH/APTicket A4 devices and the 3GS can be restored to 5.1.1
The blobs need to be saved with TinyUmbrella or cydia when you are jailbroken when Apple was still signing 5.1.1

For the 4S with blobs you can restore from 5.1.1 to 5.1.1 or from 5.0.1 to 5.0.1 when the new redsn0w tool comes out.

Without blobs there is no way to go to 5.1.1.

The signing is a validation code allowing you to use that version for restore. Apple is now signing 6.0 as the sole iOS fo restore (bar some exception for the 3G etc.)

So in a nutshell then, I'm stuck with 5.0.1 until I am prepared to make the switch to 6. Well thankyou so much, Apple. The more time goes by, the more I hate you.

Thanks for your reply

where do you manually download 5.1.1 from? I'm still on 5.1.1, so can I still save blobs now?

Is this an old bootrom 3GS? There is a method of starting the restore, allowing it to go all the way until it hits the error message, unplug it immediately, close iTunes, plug it back in, and use a method (like TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery. I'll see if I can find the article that explains it exactly, as what I just described is actually from memory.

if you paid a bit more attention you could have saved your blobs and with the new redsn0w be able to restore to 5.0.1.

Argg now I am trapped at 4.3.1

I sure don't want apple maps and to lose youtube so no to ios6, but I avoided iOS5 for the battery drain problems. Now I can't use some ios5 requiring apps and I am stuck in Limbo with iPad2's original ios4.3.1
Apple you DO make it hard to love ya!:(
