Carrier Can you switch from AT&T upgrade program to Apples program mid-contract?

I currently have AT&T and em eligible for upgrade with device trade in. I’d like to Switch to Apples upgrade program because AT&T has given me many issues with device returns in the past - loosing my trade in etc.

Has anyone purchased from Apple while still needing to return device to AT&T? Is it possible or is the only option to pay off the device and then just buy new from Apple (and sell the old one)?

You can only do the return/tradein via AT&T thru Apple if you have an existing financed device. You'd have to pay it off first.
