Can you turn on monitor only with new 27in iMac?

I am seriously considering the possibility of using the 27in iMac as an external monitor with my MBP when I am home and need the extra monitor space. That would also allow my family to use the iMac when I am away at work or out of town. Since my MBP has a Mini DisplayPort, it should be as easy as connecting the MDP from the laptop to the MDP on the back of the iMac and then connecting the USB for audio? However if the iMac is turned on, how can I use the monitor without the actual computer running at the same time?

You can't do this. Gizmodo's review of the new iMacs mentioned that the video card runs through the logic board (or something like that) which means that to use the iMac monitor the iMac must be turned on. Though, when the iMac is being used as a second monitor you cannot use it as a computer too (other than the audio controls and brightness on the keyboard). Read the Gizmodo review it'll tell you.

Thanks GS, that makes sense regarding the logic board. Kinda stinks. So what about the possibility of booting up the iMac and then connecting the MBP to it. Would that run into the exact same problem?

Same problem? No, booting up the iMac and connecting the MBP to it is how you use the iMac as a 2nd monitor.
