Is there a way to update the software via iTunes instead of the Apple TV itself?

The reason I ask is it looks like thats changing...

The new Apple TV is a USB device, not a host. So in theory it would update like an iPhone or other iDevice.

Which in theory would mean if its going to be hacked it wont be through a Flash drive. Can't wait to see what happens with this "hobby."

True, if it is to be hack it'll be hacked in a similar manner to an iPhone or other iDevice.

To answer your question, no you cannot update the old Apple TV’s firmware via iTunes.

Looks like this device really is going to work similar to an iOS device. I wonder if it’ll get yearly iOS updates from now on? WWDC should be interesting.

Well the front page just confirmed that Apple TV is running iOS 4.1 because Apple just posted the firmware for it. You can even download it now off Apple's servers and guess what... it has already been jailbroken!
