Can you upgrade from GM to retail?

Right now I have two partitions, one lion, the the other is mountian lion. Can I upgrade the lion to mountain lion GM and merge the partitions then when retail comes out upgrade to that. Is that possible? Does that make sense? lol

The GM should be the retail version. So there's really no real reason to install it again. But if it makes you feel better go ahead and buy it from the App Store. I assume you plan on upgrading your Lion install to ML and then you wish to reclaim the disk space from the ML partition?

If I'm remembering correctly (I strongly advise you to wait until someone else confirms this) you can delete the old GM ML partition in Disk Utility (using the "-" button) you should then be able to extend (by dragging) the Lion/ML Retail partition to include the entire disk, or the portion you deleted. I hope that makes sense...

Well power nap doesn't work in the GM. And yeah what I plan to do is upgrade my lion to retail mountain lion when it comes out since I get it free with my 2012 macbook air, then I'll just have one partition but if I wanted to upgrade from mountain lion gm to the retail version would it work or would I need a clean install?

You could, but you'd be installing the exact same thing over again. It's a waste of time.

gm is retail, retail is gm. It is byte for byte the exact same thing, when there were dvd's it was what was burned onto dvds.

For Lion it was. The GM was 100% the same as the retail build. The only difference is the GM had a different build number to the retail build. I know this because the people who purchased Lion got the retail build. But the people who got Lion for free with a code (through a recent Mac purchase) downloaded the GM from the Mac App Store.

I was one of these people who got Lion for free thanks to purchasing a iMac a few weeks before Lion was released. And the version number of the Lion I downloaded was the same as the GM. And it updated to 10.7.1 etc etc just the same as the retail version did.

So apart from a major unforeseen issue I'd say the GM pretty much equals the retail version for Mountain Lion.

Actually, system updates do not require input of your Apple ID, so this is not true. They work just like the old software update, except inside the app store.

That said, you should buy it.
