Can you use it as an iPod without needing to do a credit check etc?

I live in Dubai and we won't see the iPhone for a long time yet... but the temptation to buy one from the Apple online store just to use as an iPod is almost overwhelming

Does anyone know if you can use it as an iPod without needing to go through the AT&T credit check process? Obviously, not living in the USA, I wouldn't get authorised.

No... all features are locked until it is activated. You can sign up for a pre-paid plan if your credit is declined, and I understand you can enter all 0's for the SSN in order to get the pre-paid plan options.
