Does anyone know if the iBookstore will be to Canadians when the iPad is release? Will their be any features that we won't be able to get?

There is no way of knowing, but nothing has been rumoured about iBooks in Canada at launch. The Canadian publishing industry has moved very slowly toward ebooks. In truth, they have hardly moved at all. Amazon.ca doesn't offer ebooks, Chapters has very few and few publishers sell ebook versions from their websites. I doubt you will see the Canadian version of iBooks anytime soon. Maybe after a year of iBooks success and Apple pressure the Canadian book publishers will join the digital age.

Until then, I recommend getting a free american iTunes account and downloading the US iBooks. Then you can at least get the 30,000 free ebooks in the iBookstore (plus Winnie the Pooh) and even download the paid ones by using prepaid Vanilla Mastercards from Shoppers Drug Mart.

Well said. That's what I did on mine...works perfectly! :)

Please tell me more... Can I buy this "vanilla M/C" from any Shoppers Drug Marts in Canada? I want to add it to my US iTunes account, and start buying apps, can I?

I bought a MasterCard gift card once...in order to buy some apps from the app store. Anyways, after a couple days, my iTunes account told me that I owed a certain amount of money. I called Apple and they informed me that even though you can get the apps with the gift card, it doesn't go threw with the transaction or anything...so i'd have to use a real credit card. But that's for the app store. And, I might have been using a Canadian account, i'm not sure.

But to clarify, I am able to make a US account and buy stuff from the US stores with a gift card? Can I still use the purchased music I have in my Canadian store?

I am quite certain you can get them at any Shopper's Drug Mart. Some prepaid credit cards are Canadian and iTunes will reject them outright if you try to use them with a US account (like an RBC prepaid Visa). I have attached a pic of the ones that I buy (they are the only ones that don't have French on the back). So far, I have used them to buy ebooks on iBooks, Pages and Numbers in the US app store since none of those are available yet in the Canadian store. However, if you search for "iPad" in iTunes you will see that 99% of the iPads apps are already available in Canada.

You will have to make up a fake address though for your US iTunes account.

I have gone through 3 $50 dollar cards in the last 3 weeks and haven't had any trouble. Did you perhaps exceed the prepaid limit on the card?

After you have purchased the apps, music and books in the american store they all exist peacefully with your Canadian ones. I've had no trouble. Except when updating the apps you have to sign into both accounts, one to update the Canadian ones then the American.

I have the iBooks app (created an American iTunes account), however when I access it from my iPad with my American iTunes account logged in, it can't connect. This is the same as trying to connect to the iTunes store via my iPad, it recognizes that I'm connecting from Canada and doesn't allow me access.

Can anyone let me know how I can download books?

I have never encountered such difficulty. When I log in with my US account in the iPad Settings the App Store and iBookstore work perfectly. If I log in with my Canadian account it tells me there is no such store at this time.

Im Canadian, Would I be able to download only the iBooks app and just use it to read my ebooks I already have ? I dont need to access the store ...

Ive put all my ebooks into itunes and waiting to see if I can download the ibooks app to just read

Yeah. You can just sign up for a free US iTunes account and download iBooks no problem, you just won't be able to buy anything until you enter a US credit card number.

Instructions for a free American iTunes account:

Does the US iTunes store add tax to your purchase?

It doesn't seem to. I just checked my card history and for a $6.99 US book I was charged $7.01 CAD. But the visa adds a charge of 2.5% a couple days later for it being an international purchase since the card knows it was purchased in Canada.

I ran into a somewhat similar problem to what you are experiencing (at least I think so)

I created my US iTunes account and was able to download apps from the US store all I wanted. However, when I decided to add some apps that I had downloaded from the Canadian store, I wa kicked out of the US store - iPad said that I was in Canada and could not access the US store.

Deleted the Canadian apps, and everything was A-OK again......
