I check every so often to see if this option might appear, and today it did!
I logged in today and I have the option for any of the iPhone data packages as well as to no longer have a data plan.

But now I am not sure whether or not to cancel...

This is probably a good move on AT&T's part. The $20 for text and data probably costs them a fortune due to the amount of data iPhone users go through.

Otherwise they want people to have the option to use Pay as you go so they can rob you since not all people realize the amount of data the iPhone can use even if you don't surf the internet. Example: email, weather, stocks, youtube. I know this lady I work with got an unlocked iPhone for T-Mobile and she didn't get a data plan (her son uses the phone). I warned her and she didn't listen, now guess what --- High Data Bill.

I will probably cancel the data plan for now as I am using a cheap GPRS Nokia that I do not use data on. This will hold me over until the new iPhone comes out.

yes, but is it part of the 2-year contract that we signed by officially activating it through iTunes? are we breaking this contract by removing the data plan that was originally selected or is it just the voice plan that satisfies the 2-year contract? I have a feeling it is the data plan since I am still "eligible for phone upgrade" if I sign a new 2-year voice plan so that seems to be independent of the iPhone 2-year agreement.

They might be doing this in preparation for a "3G limited data" plan, or several other flavors of plans more tailored to the faster 3G network. If you remove your old one, you may not have the option to add one for $20 in the future, they do this sort of thing all the time with their phone service. My family is on an old plan for $39.99 with 450 minutes, but you can't get this plan anymore. If we were to upgrade to a 550 plan or something else temporarily, we'd lose the $39.99 plan forever with no option to get it back on a family plan.

(my account doesn't have the option to remove right now btw, just checked because like bacaramac, i'm using a temporary phone between iPhone v1 and iPhone v2 in the meantime)

Excellent! I just checked and indeed they have given us control over turning off and on the data plan (and other features) without the need to call a customer service rep. For those who don't know, the data plan is prorated.

Good point...
I have two concerns about this. I don't know if I can add text messages after I cancel the iPhone data. Right now I have iPhone Data + 200 TXTS plus unlimited M2M for $25. Also, not sure if it will shut off my data completely or just start to charge me per kb. Yikes!

It does shut off the data completely; there is no per KB charge. As for the text messages, I text, and I haven't noticed any additional charges, but I can't say I've looked closely at my bill for this.

This can't be true can it? There are still people here talking about how we can't choose to cancel the data.
