Hey yesterday i got paid and ordered the iMac with 4850 right away, but later on i reed something about the 4850 iMacs freezing, should i cancel the order and wait or should i see if mine is fine? im want the iMac so bad now, that im not sure i will be able to cancel, i guess i get a replacement if the one i get now freeze.. what should i do?

Seems to be related to using wi-fi, so if you're using wired ethernet you should be okay.

I am on wired ethernet and haven't had any of the freezing issues.

Keep it. I ordered one too, there is a simple fix out that which is to run a Fan adjustment program that lets you turn up one of the cooling fans that seems to resolve the problem to almost 100%. That can hold you over until Apple fixes it.

"I am also one of the many who have had freezing issues. IDK if this solution will work for everyone but this cured my imac with ATI 4850HD...Mine was over heating because the fans weren't turning on. I installed a a program called "temperature monitor" and viewed how hot my components were (north bridge heat-sink 70c, GPU 60c). I also noticed that every time my GPU would get that hot, my comp would then freeze and I would have to hard reset. I called apple and they mentioned something about a faulty fan. So I thought what the heck, and installed a program called "fan control" (there is a specific version for imacs). Low and behold, the fans weren't responding to apples heat sensor controls and my fans weren't turning on. Fan control took care of this and I now have a perfectly working imac that runs pretty cold without freezes. I hope this helps anyone who has the same issue as me."

Is the program.

Here is the thread.

You have to read further down, but there are solutions for the short term.

There are also A LOT of people not having any problem at all. This isn't 100%, and I bet you money it isn't even close to 50%, its just that the people posting here, or searching out info for fixes are the ones that have the problem. There are many happy 4850 owners with no problem that post here.

ok, but if i get it and i keep it for before the 10.5.7 update and i have it over 14 days and then the update comes and doesnt fix it, does i still get a replacement if it freeze? i have apple care if that matters for some reason....

Little OT is this i good second screen?: http://www.benq-eu.com/products/LCD/?product=1072

Cancel it mate - not worth having a crippled computer for whatever reason. The second one is still busted and is going to be returned.

don't know about you, but i'm waiting till early-mid may till i place an order. i'm skeptical about 10.5.7 fixing the freezing issue.

But i Might get a fine imac, and if not i could just return it right?

hmm really hard to decide, i really want one now, been waiting since january

You should worry. You might start losing your hair; someone here posted that they lost all their hair. You should never go on holiday; some people go on holiday and when they come back, they are dead.

Look, thousands of people here by iMacs. With thousands of people, there will be some who have problems. And they are the ones who you hear about; those who don't have anything wrong don't scream about it.

Years ago I wanted to take my wife on a holiday to Egypt. Then she read that some tourists were shot there by terrorists. I couldn't convince her to go. Did you know you are more likely to die on a car accident on the way to or from the airport than being killed by terrorists on Egypt? And about as likely to die because some mad security guard uses a tazer on you? Result: I never saw the pyramids due to excessive worrying.

Get that iMac.

good point, i guess i just feel that there is so many with the problem, i just wait and see if it is broken i return it

I disagree with the assessment that its just a few people complaining. Yes, every product is going to have complaints online because some are bound to be defective. However, due to the volume and consistency of complaints about this one specific issue with this one specific model points to a much higher risk of getting a defective mac if you get this model than if you were to get any other model.

Yes, chances are a great deal if not a majority of the 4850's coming out of the factory are fine, but there is no doubt a significant percentage that are not.

This is further evidenced by people who claim to be on their second or third replacement. One defective unit is certainly possible and can happen to anyone. Getting two or three in a row points to something horribly wrong with the product in general.

While forums are by no means a scientific sample, compared to the amount of complaints about other Apple products, especially the new iMacs, it is safe to say that a vast majority of the complaints if not the single main complaint over the last few weeks has been the 4850's freezing. Again, that's not scientific, but its strong enough evidence to me.

My advice is to get a GT130 model, which is still pretty damn good, or waiting until its been verified that whatever plagues the 4850's has been taken care of.

It is interesting that Applecare still refuse to acknowledge there are more than one person having this problem. They always say they have never heard of it before. However they a quick enough to offer a replacement. Maybe they are under orders to keep quiet.

Dammit this is so sad, first i waited a long time for the macs to arrive then i had to wait for the 4850 and now i gotta wait even more for apple to fix this ****, i really dont want to got to 130 because i have waited so long for this ATI 4850

i want it so bad now that i think i will just take my 50/50 chance, but here is no way that apple will refuse to give me a new one if it is broken right?

Right. But why take the risk and waste your time. Maybe you get for what it seems a good one and a little over a year later it completely dies because of a hardware issue related to the current lock-ups.

I also have been waiting for the 4850 iMac to be available at my local Apple Store but I'm not gonna purchase it till I know exactly what the cause of the freezes is. In the meantime I installed iDeneb, a modified OS X installation, on my PC that also has a 4850 installed. I had already purchased a 1TB external disc and a 640GB disc for in my Linux box for Mac shares and Time Machine backups so I have something to play with now. Maybe an option for you?

Get that iMac.

Perfect ;)

Yep, Really theres lots and lots and lots of people that bought the iMac. And that means the people that have problems come here to ask for help. Now compare those amount of people that have problems to the amount of people who have bought the iMacs and have no problems.

Highly doubt you'll be one of them with problems ;)

Go for it.

well your maybe right but its also people that have gotten 3 macs in a row with the problem, so its seems like the risk is high..
