As the title suggests, I have the unlimited data plan grandfathered on my iPad. Of course, in order to keep it I have to continuously renew it every month or lose it forever. I kept it going over the summer due to traveling but now I have to make a decision.

I won't be travelling again until November, when I visit some family who do not have any type of internet connection in their home at all -- but are in a good AT&T reception area. I think I could make due with a 2GB cap for a week, but I guess I'm struggling with the idea that I'd have to keep tabs on how much data I would be using. I might want to stream a netflix movie or two while I'm there.

I think I'm going to cancel it, but do you think an iPad with an unlimited plan would add significant value if sold? I was thinking of selling it after my November trip and simply waiting for the next revision. I won't be travelling before the new one comes out.

It sounds to me like you're not using the full 2GB each month.

I had the same concern (would 2GB be enough each month) when I purchased my iPad. I also stream the occasional NetFlix movie or Hulu+ show to my iPad, but I have yet to use 2GB total 3G data for the two months I've owned my iPad. With that said I do use WiFi as much as possible if it is available.

Not sure how much the resale value would be for the unlimited plan assuming it can be transferred to the new owner. I tried to find this out when I purchased my iPad b/c I was thinking of purchasing an iPad with an unlimited plan, but even when I called AT&T and asked them this question directly I could get a straight answer.

So you just have to determine if you'll use it or not. If not, save yourself $5 a month and forget about it.

Since I've had it, I've not managed to use 2GB. However, I did manage to run up just over 1GB in just 2 days recently. This was primarily because we were streamning netflix movies and web surfing in a long car trip to our destination.

One thing that holds me back is that Time Warner is coming out with an iPad app that will apparently allow users to stream their cable service on their iPads. If that's true--that would be very cool on trips and use up a LOT of data if not connected to Wifi.

I think I'll just cancel it. I'll save $30 a month and could always just buy another 1GB for $10 if I went over 2GB in a given time period. I hate being in this position though, one of the reasons I got the thing was having no contract, unlimited 3G service that I could switch on and off.

If you have an iphone 4, why not just jail break it and get mywi 4.0 to tehter to your ipad. I cancled my ipad service and now just tehter to my iphone 4, and keep my unlimited service.

Just an FYI, there isn't the option to buy 1gb for $10. You just run out and can start your 2gb all over again buy adding a new 30 day month, or wait until. Your renewal time.

The overage options only apply to the iPhone.

I would just keep the unlimited if you could, its just another 5 dollars a month, which will add up but if you have already reached the 2 gig limit I believe its foolish to cancel just my two cents

I did try out MyWi when I had an iPhone 3G and it was painfully slow. Slower than the native 3G on the iPad. However, I haven't tried it with my iPhone 4 yet--I don't think the 3G has HSPA+ support and the iPhone 4 does.

Well, the problem is there are months when I don't need data service at all and I hate wasting money. However, when I *do* need it--I tend to use it very intensely. I'm probably over-thinking this.

I started with the unlimited but switched to 2GB the second month since I figured out my usage. I did get charged for both ($29.99 and $25) when I made the switch though and had to call AT&T to dispute the charge for the unlimited plan. I was given a case number and was refunded within two weeks.

You are over thinking it, keep the plan jailbreak and use mywi and tether all your devices!

It IS a waste to keep paying just to keep the unlimited plan going for those times when you may need it. Go with whatever the latest AT&T plan is when you need 3G.

I suggest looking into the prepaid myfi options either as a replacement to AT&T or to supplement it. I'm seriously considering VirginMobile's myfi.

Personally since AT&T let out my email address some months ago on that iPad mess-I keep getting strange emails from wherever. Due to that alone, I stopped my unlimited and am very happy since I search out wifi connections all over the place and so far have only once in 2 months wished I had 3G activated. But will gladly wait until another company comes out with a micro card solution.

Why give those ******** one more penny than needed. I now dislike them so much due to the above I am changing my house's alarm to radio from phone. Then I will change my internet from them to Comcast ($20/month) (minimum AT&T phone and internet costs around $90/month) and I'm done with them FOREVER!!

Oh, forgot I am also changing over to Verizon this week since I am tired of paying AT&T $165/mo for 2 iPhones.

Not, too big to fail-just too big NOT to bail!!:D

View your monthly data usage and evaluate from there....

@MANGROVE yeah AT&T is raping the consumer because Apple doesn't want to allow there users to have Choice for the iPhone and I'm personally tired of the high monthly bills.... Sprint has a better everything data plan

Also considering canceling the iPad Unlimited

I also have unlimited plans on my 3g iPad and my iPhone 4 and recently jailbroke both devices so I am considering canceling the iPad plan. My usage doesn't really justify keeping the iPad unlimited, however, I hate giving up something like the unlimited plan which can't be reordered.

For those who had the unlimited iPad plan and then canceled it are you happy for the performance of MyWi and tethering to the iPhone? How does it compare with 3g direct from the iPad? Also is there any downside to tethering for long periods of time such as potential wear and tear on the iPhone?

Thanks

That is what i did and it works great, You can also plug your phone into a PC and use your phone for a connection on it too. I canceled my data plan on my ipad when it was ready for renewal. Why pay for service for the Pad that you have on your Phone already? ;)
