Cancel O2 contract and hack?

Hi,

I have had my iPhone since the UK launch (10days ago) and have been thinking about the contract that I have got. Basically for me to keep up my current usage of texts and minutes, I would be paying an absolute fortune.

Anyway, I was thinking, I have read on here that you have 14days to cancel the contract. Is this true?

If it is, would it be possible for me to then hack my iPhone (it is an OOTB 1.1.2 UK) to use another O2 sim in it?

I have read that this is possible and found a few links, but do not know if they work on OOTB 1.1.2s.

If this is possible then I will be on the phone to O2 tomorrow to cancel my contract, and then order a SIMplicity tarriff SIM.

I have looked into this a bit further, but still do not know if I can cancel my contract and then hack my iPhone.

Regarding cancelling your contract – phone O2 support, they are the only people who can advise you here. All I know is; if you cancel you will have to take the iPhone back and request a full refund, meaning you will have to buy another unit to hack it.

Regarding hacking – yes it seems possible to hack and use an O2 PAYG SIM. Is it advisable? – personally, I wouldn't do it. You will run into problems when future updates are released. You will also not benefit from the free Cloud Wi-Fi access and data plan you get with the O2 contract.

I can guarantee O2 will not be happy about PAYG SIM cards being used in hacked iPhones, so Apple / O2 will no-doubt try to do something to prevent it.

Hacking is always going to be a risk, it's up to you at the end of the day.

If you find your usage is more than you expected, think about upgrading your account to the £45 or £55 tariff. You can go up, but not down.

I would go for it.
The sale of goods act in the UK gives you 14 days to cancel your contract. Apparently some people have been told by o2 that they can only cancel if they return their Iphone to an 02 store, this is ridiculous, as you pay for it separately, and I'm sure there will be a law suite heading 02/apples way at some point if they really insist this.
But If they do insist on this then just return your Iphone and get your money back, as the sales of good act applies here too.. aslong as you haven't damaged it. Then Buy another unactivated one from an Apple store and follow one of the numerous tutorials online to activate your new Iphone to accept any o2 sim. Do your research, but from what I'v seen all you will lack is visual voicemail. You will be able to get everything that the Iphone contract offers you, but on pay as you go, with more minutes, more texts and for £10 less a month.

Possibly an even better idea would be to take out a different o2 contract on another phone, with a much better deal. And then use that sim in your jailbroken Iphone, you will get a free handset, which you could unlock and sell on ebay to go towards the cost of your Iphone. And in 12 months time you will get another free phone and they would probably offer you a better deal. Phone companies build up credit on your account if you have a contract with them, and if you tell them you might move to someone els at the end of your contract then the advisor you speak to is allowed to release that credit. It costs them alot more to recruit new customers than to hang on to old ones, so generally they are quite keen to hang on to you. At the end of my last contract i doubled my txts and minutes for the same price I was paying before..

If the lack of cloud access is a problem for you then you could subscribe to it separately for £7 a month...
As far as updates go, yes you may be limited, but for people who have unlocked so far, it has just involved waiting a few weeks after it is released to see if applying it is safe. Also, so far all that has really arrived in the updates have been the itunes store, bug fixes and multiple language support. The way I view it, is you pay for the device because it is excellent already, rather than because it can be made excellent in the future through updates. If the hacking community allows you to install future updated through their workarounds then bonus. But I don't agree that anyone should be paying apple extra revenue every month for them (because apple took o2 to the cleaners when they were competing to sell them, meaning the monthly tariff is so extortionate).
