16in MBP order placed. Waited a few weeks, all of a sudden:

“Your recent online order with Apple has been canceled because it exceeds the quantity limits per customer.”

What gives? Last Apple item I ordered was a year ago. And this order was Qty 1…

Customer service has no idea, says just order again. Which I probably have no choice, but am woe to charge thousands of $ and wait weeks again for the same outcome if no one knows why this happened and the same underlying problem is there.

I love B&H for photo and TV equipment, and have spent thousands there. But I would never buy a computer there, thanks to their rigid return policy -- basically once you open it, it's yours, and you can deal with Apple's warranty. Microcenter is good, if they have what you want.

What was the config? Apple has several stock configurations besides the 3 on their web page that come to stores for local pickup.

I wanted it pretty much maxed out.

BH shipping Monday is pretty tempting over Apple’s April 25 and possibly just canceling on me again, return policy notwithstanding… hmm

Store configurations I've seen local pickup - use the best configuration to start with and then customized to see it show if any local stores have them for local pickup. Tend to be rare and grabbed in minutes when they are received.

14" M Max 32 core 64 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD ($4,099.00 USD)
16" M Max 32 core 64 GB RAM and 4 TB SDD ($4,899.00 USD)

At BH or MC you’re saying?

To add insult to injury, I used a gift card for part of my order. I discarded it recently because I considered the physical card useless/spent. Now, with Apple canceling my order, support couldn’t tell me the gift card number so that’s lost… ugh so frustrating.

Those are additional Apple store configs. The gift card transaction takes 1-3 days to show up. You can call back and they check the status.

Hmm the problem is I placed the order, and paid partially using a gift card.

Now, they’ve cancelled my order. My CC or gift card were never actually charged as I think they wait for shipment to do that, the cancellation is more “hey we’re actually not going to give you a computer but no worries we didn’t charge you”. Nothing needs to be reversed. So there’s still a balance on that card, problem is I threw it out because I thought I was done with it and didn’t see any further use for what I thought was an empty card sitting on my desk.

I think I’m SOL, but not giving up yet.

Just talk to a apple rep, they should be able to look up your purchase history details via phone. Your not likely the only person that has happened to. It's their fault what happened. :)

Only so many hours in the day :) The three reps I’ve tried so far can’t help since it’s a physical card and they “can’t see” the details of it on their end. I suspect once I find the right one I might still succeed…!

this happened to someone else on this board and they called and had the cancellation reversed.
Lucky :) I spent the morning ping ponging on the phone, and the best anyone could offer was a referral to the sales dept if I wanted to place a new order and get to the back of the line :(

The custom configs are definitely an issue. Are you able to get by with a stock model? A year from now we might have a new Mac Pro, so in the meantime you could use the MBP and trade up, and maybe the chip shortage will have eased?

I would ask them if they could apply the gift card amount to your account. They have a record of that amount, and you wouldn’t be able to reapply the amount again onto your account.

This is why I always add my gift cards to the iOS wallet, that way it doesn't matter if the physical card gets lost or thrown out.

Good idea. In any case I finally did get someone to issue a new e-card for the amount I had “spent”/lost. And I’ll be getting a new MBP from BH in a matter of days instead of weeks/months. Alls well that ends well.

WOW! almost 5 Grand!

You could get a 17 Inch i9 Alderlake 14 core Laptop with better graphics card for 3 grand.

Install macOS on it and run Windows 11 to boot!

It will smoke the M1 Max.

Plus the MSI is upgradable and repairable.

You can also run external graphics cards thru Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Maybe the MBP is faster/more appropriate for this person's needs than a 14 Core Alder Lake Laptop.
Is Alder Lake fast? Sure, so is the M1 Max. Is it faster than the M1 Max? For some things yes, for other things no. At the end of the day when you're spending this much on a laptop it's about the whole system and how you use it, not just the CPU/GPU.

Also, as someone who actually runs a hackintosh, no, you can not run macOS on that laptop (as Nvidia GPUs haven't been supported for a long time and Intel's new GPU arch is also not compatible with macOS at this time,) at least not unless you're willing to forgo GPU acceleration (or try to get macOS, likely in a VM, to work nicely with an external thunderbolt AMD GPU... oh and good luck getting a desktop AMD GPU in the performance range of the M1 Max or 3070Ti without spending $1200+)
