I currently have US Cellular with about six months until my contract is up. One way or another I'm switching to AT&T in July so I can get an iPhone. I know I may have to pay a cancellation fee but I'm curious how the number transfer works. If I'm not mistaken cell phone owners own their number so does the current contract need to have been cancelled before transferring the number to a new service? Or can I walk into an AT&T or Apple store, buy the iPhone and transfer the number on the spot and deal with my current carrier after?

If you chose to transfer your number, as soon as the number transfers, you essentially close your account with the old carrier. They'll send you your final bill with the ETF included.
