If I cancel my data plan using one of the many tricks on here to do it, and then I sell my iPhone on eBay or something, is whoever buys it going to be able to get data on it themselves whenever they go to get their own plan?

Sorry if it's confusing. :|

Edit: Also, I just want to remove my iPhone from myWireless/account thing, but not cancel my contract. I won't have to pay an ETF or anything if I do this, will I?

You don't have to "trick" them to remove your data plan. It's only required if you're using the iPhone. Your contract will continue normally.

The person buying it will have their data added, no effort on their part, as soon as they put their SIM in the phone and it registers with AT&T.

Awesome, seemed like a lot of trouble before.

Thanks! :)

How long does this typically take? My buddy got an iPhone from a friend of mine and he isn't being charged for the iPhone data plan. That was back in December. I even told him before he bought it that AT&T will automatically put him on the data plan once the phone registers to his account. He said that was fine and he had no problem paying for it. However, AT&T never put the data plan on his account, so he just uses the phone and connects to his wifi for data. He also gets MMS on it, but he already had that on his account.

Honestly I couldn't say. Back in the day you had to activate an iPhone through iTunes before using it and that was when the data plan was tacked on to your account.

It's entirely possible that, unless it's purchased through Apple or AT&T, it's left up to the user.
