Salutations,

I got my new iMac this morning (refurb 2.16 C2D), and I am in the process of finally, FINALLY migrating everything over from that awful Dell I have been using for six long years.

While I know that Intel Macs can READ Windows NTFS-formatted external drives, I was not aware that they can "selectively see" what is on the drive.

An explanation:

I am trying to pull my music from the drive. I had previously consolidated my library using iTunes on the PC. However, my iMac is not seeing the folder. Moreover, it is not seeing several other folders with valuable information stored in them. Curiously, my massive image directory (in excess of 50 Gigs) is happily recognized by the new iMac, along with several other (seemingly random) folders on the drive.

Does anyone have a solution? A good way to get everything off?

I would be forever grateful!

Many thanks!

Aww....

I will be really bummed if I have to copy every single Gig's worth of data onto DVDs...that would probably take days! I have somewhere on the order of 139 Gigs of data...

There isn't some kind of workaround for this that anyone knows? I've Googled to beat hell, and read these forums like crazy, but I can't find a solution.

NO ONE has ever seen this selective reading before from the drive?

Oh well, thanks anyway...

Why don't you use a network connection?

Hook both systems together with a ethernet cable and set your whole Windows drive to be a shared network drive. You can then drag the files off your PC and into the Mac using the Finder.

Thank you so much for the reply!

As it turns out, the computer has to go back for unrelated problems (12 dead pixels), so in the mean time I will just back my data up to DL-DVD-Rs as I had been intending to all along. A long, painful process, but a necessary one.

Anyhow, thanks much for the advice. When I learn more about wireless networking, I will be sure to connect everything for more seamless data transfer.

Cheers!
