'Cannot be modified' - Toshiba 1tb EXT works on only one of my MacBook Pros laptops

Hello,
I have two macbook pro laptops for work and one will let me add files to a my Toshiba ext hardrive 1tb and the other laptop says 'Toshiba EXT cannot be modified" when I try to add a file to it.
I want to keep the files on the Toshiba ext harddrive and not reformat for just one of the laptops. Do I need to install something on the 2nd laptop for it to be able to add files to the Toshiba hardrive??

Which Mac OS are you running on your laptop #1? On laptop #2?

What format is your external hard drive in? FAT32? ExFAT? NTFS? Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Other?

2 laptops

The one Macbook that it works on is Version 10.7.5 (Laptop #1)

The one that is saying 'cannot be modified' 10.5.8 (Laptop #2)

I am able to put on a new pic to the Toshiba Ext using laptop #1 and unplug it, and then plug the harddrive into Laptop #2 and take that new pic off the harddrive onto the laptop #2. However I can not add any new files to lapptop #2 without it saying 'Toshiba EXT cannot be modified'

You didn't read it carefully enough. There is more in that post than simply how to reformat the drive. Read the NTFS section, specifically the information about Paragon.

Since the posts in that thread have been deleted, I'll repost the information here:

Mac OS X can only read NTFS drives natively, but writing is possible via several methods. NTFS (Windows NT File System)

• Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
• Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X [*]To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
  • For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon ($19.95) (Best Choice for Lion and Mountain Lion)
  • For Mac OS X 10.5 and later, including Lion, FUSE for OS X
  • For 32-bit Mac OS X, install NTFS-3G for Mac OS X (free) (does not work in 64-bit mode)
  • Some have reported problems using Tuxera (approx $36), which is an enhanced version of NTFS-3G with faster performance.
  • Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and later versions, but is not advisable, due to instability.
• AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
• Maximum file size: 16 TB
• Maximum volume size: 256TB
• You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.

The acticle says - "Disk Utility has the ability to add, delete, and resize hard drive partitions without first erasing the hard drive."

but, when I just tried the partitioning this message came up:


Partitioning this disk will permanently erase all the data from the disk.

This volume will be erased:
“TOSHIBA EXT”

The following volumes will be added:
“Untitled 1”
“old mac”

Are you sure you wish to partition the disk “Toshiba External USB 3.0 Media”?

Read the bold text in my last post. I didn't say anything about partitioning, but directed you to look at Paragon.

Great. Thank you for your patience. I found that Tuxera comes on my harddrive and could easily install it. Now it works.
