I have always had my startup chime off, but while trying to diagnose an issue with the Xcode simulator crashing I have installed a fresh copy of Big Sur 11.3.1

But now, I am unable to turn my startup chime off. I untick the box, then I leave preferences and if I return to preferences immediately it's back on.

It's the only option on the sound panel which does not hold the settings.

I have seen a couple of posts suggesting this is a known issue and the setting is stuck in whatever it was before the recent update.

Is this still the case? Am I stuck with this startup chime until an Apple update?

Same problem here. I guess we are stuck with it but I only turn off my MacBook Air completely once every few days so I am not too bothered. However, if you are not anticipating it and are in a quiet environment it can be quite jarring.

I'm too old fashioned and like to shut down fully when I'm not using it.

I remember back in my uni days. Silent reading room at the library, sit down to do work. BING "Look at me I have a Mac" while it echos around the room.

Never did remember to start up before going in

everyone i know sleeps their mac, and this has been so for at least 20 years. & just not sure why shutting down at night is 'old fashioned'. what's the benefit of shutting down? and wouldn't sleeping your mac overnight solve the chime-in-the morning problem? or at least, be a workaround? just a thought.

Old fashioned as a figure of speech.

Shutting down has zero benefit other than making me feel better.

As a person with autism some things while irrational to others are how they are. Everything happens the same way, it goes in it’s leather sleeve, and goes in the exact same spot on my shelf. Just like everything else in my house. Switches are turned off at the wall etc too (with the exception of NAS and router).

I know full well that there is no technical benefit to any of this at all and I am not going to pretend otherwise. But hey! We can’t choose what irrational stuff we obsess over :)
