I’ve been trying to copy over my iTunes Media folder from my Mac mini (with Samsung 970 Evo NVMe SSD) onto an external drive to transfer over to my other MBP. Tried 2 external FW drives and a USB Flash Drive with no success. 18 gigs of my 52 gig folder gets copied over and then comes up with the error 100083. Any ideas?

DriveDX just presented this to me so there is something going on with my new Samsung 970 Evo.

Looks like I'm not the only one:

Have you tried Airdropping to your new computer?

Have you tried copying in portions instead of all at once?
I didn't know you can Air Drop 52 gigs. I'm trying a SuperDuper clone right now to see if that works. There seems to be some issues with these NVMe drives. I'll have to keep an eye on it. Not sure if I'm suppose to "Organize and Consolidate" my media before copying over, but I might not be able to if it won't copy over manually. No, I haven't tried copying just portions.

Copy Compilations, then A-E, etc.

By the same token, if you use Apple Music with iCloud Music Library, you can just download everything fresh to your computer.

I'll see how this clone works and, if not, I'll try copying in pieces. There may be an issue with my Sintech adapter.....hopefully not the Samsung.

Is it a HDD or SSD..?
HDD should be HFS+

Is the error with the Mac Mini internal drive from DriveDX?

My internal Mac mini is NVMe SSD. My external HDD Firewire drive clone volumes are formatted APFS as well. The other volumes are HFS+. The error is coming from DriveDX installed on my Mac mini SSD. The error came even when copying over to the volumes formatted as HFS+.

Have you tried Migration Assistant.

My SuperDuper clone is nearly finished. DriveDX popped up twice during the clone and now is reporting 63 errors. I suppose my HDD volumes should all be HFS+. Not sure if that's what would cause the errors. I've never used Migration Assistant. Probably should give it a try sometime. I've always like manually copying over files.

The clone completed fine so I'll copy over the iTunes Media folder from there.
Hmmm. My clean install of Monterey on my MBP only has a Music folder and a Media folder inside that. Not sure if I should drag the entire iTunes Media folder over to the Media folder or just what's inside the iTunes Media folder.

Monterey doesn't have iTunes.
You may be better importing music from the music app, and tv/movies from the tv app.

If the folder structure is obvious on the mbp, you could copy relevant folders from one to the other.
Not sure how the music/tv apps handle the metadata of the media (they may need to be added/imported).

I am on Mojave with a standard iTunes setup.

OP:

For a platter based drive that is going to be used for data ONLY (no bootable OS on it), use HFS+.
NOT APFS.
Things may go much better that way.
Try it...

I think I'll try that method. Hopefully I don't lose my playlists.

Yes, I formatted data only volumes in MacOS Extended (Journaled). My clone volume is APFS. Apple also says traditional HDD's can be formatted APFS (for just storage as well): "can also be used with older systems with traditional hard disk drives (HDD) and external, direct-attached storage."

Ignore Apple.
Only use HFS+ for spinny HDD's.
Since I've already got my SuperDuper volume formatted APFS, can anyone tell me what the negative hits are for this format on HDD's? Before I erase and reformat?

If this is just a backup/clone, I would leave it.
For everyday usage maybe not.
It is just a backup but I’d love to hear what you base some of that advice on. Did you have an APFS volume on an HDD that failed? Other issues?

I am only going on advice from others on the Forums, and APFS was initially developed for SSD drives.
Also all my external drives (HDD) have always been HFS+ with no issues (if it ain't broke....).

I copied over my music to the Music Media folder in Monterey (iTunes Media folder in previous MacOS). Non elf my music is showing or playlists. Hmm.

If you're going to use SuperDuper to clone a boot volume that is in APFS, it's probably best to leave the "target drive" in APFS, even if it's a platter-based hard drive. The clone probably won't even go through if it's an HFS+ drive.

For platter-based drives that will be used to store data ONLY (not bootable), HFS+ is the way to go.
