I've begun having connectivity issues on my local network. I have 3 Macbooks, one on 10.10 (Yosemite) one on 10.9.5 (Mavericks), and one old one on 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I share files between these computers on a daily basis, and typically connect without a problem using the Finder Sidebar.

Recently, I haven't been able to connect to my Yosemite Macbook (maybe it was since I upgraded, but I think it might have started before then). I am able to connect from any computer (or my iphone, for that matter), to both the Mavericks macbook and the Snow Leopard Macbook. No problems. The Yosemite macbook appears in the sidebar under "shared." But when I try to connect from any other computer to yosemite macbook, it does not connect automatically, so I click "Connect As . . ." and it hangs for quite a while before finally displaying the following message:

There was a problem connecting to the server "Computer name". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check ypur network connection and then try again.

The Yosemite macbook connects to the internet and to the other two macbooks without a problem, but nothing can connect to it.

I have tried turning File sharing on and off in System Preferences, tried adding specific shared folders, tried adding a user. Under "Options" I have tried every combination of using AFP and/or SMB and selected the user account for which SMB file sharing would be important. I have attempted to connect by using Finder: Connect to Server . . . (Command-K). I also attempted the connection using cifs://[IP address]. I tried connecting using the local host name Jennings.local

I have reset my wireless router (a Time Capsule). I've removed all files I thought might be relevant in both a User:"Account":Library:preferences folder and the system wide Library preferences folder. I restarted each mac multiple times, and between each step for the Yosemite mac.

I am no expert, but I tried to Ping the Yosemite mac, and it does not appear to be responding to any pings, or at least each of the 10 I sent through network utility had a "request timeout"

I have tried with my firewall off and with it on. I have assured that I am not in stealth mode.

I have looked at Console, and I'm not sure what it means and whether I should be looking at Console for the host or the client computer. On the Yosemite mac, I'm getting the following message repeating constantly: "

and so on, every 10 seconds. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is there something wrong with my operating system version?

Most importantly, are there any other methods for connecting over a wireless network other than these? What would be my next troubleshooting step?

same type of problem

I have also connectivity issues since yosemite upgrade but from a machine running Win XP

In my case it doesn't seem to login due to "unknown user name or bad password" although all credentials are correct.

Shares seem to work from other machines, including one under 10.6.8
And connection to machines NOT under yosemite works fine also

Not sure this is the same issue as yours but I figure an answer here might help from where I am ;-)

On Topic:
1) I suppose you have activated the different services you wanted shared, knowing they might have been deselected in the upgrade process. I lost my network settings when upgrading (my manual IP had been reverted to dhcp auto)
2) Can you share the screen with screen sharing?: if yes then I would suspect the culprit be with your sharing prefs

Can't give you much more as I have reached my technical ability's limits!! :confused:

cannot connect to server

I have a similar problem with my MacBook Pro after installing Yosemite. In my case the problem is in connecting to an old pb g4 that is no longer in existence as suggested in the popup. The "problem connecting" popup comes up every time I log in and there is apparently no way to shut it down. I have turned off all file sharing and also time machine.
I'm no expert so would really appreciate some help
