Cannot edit or remove "free space" partition

Hi MacRumours,

I had a partition on my 500GB 2011 MB Pro for the Yosemite Beta, though now I have tried to delete it I have been left with a "free space" partition that I cannot edit, remove, or partition to. I would like to merge this with the primary space, restoring my 500GB hard drive.

I've tried iPartition (which couldn't do the job), and Disk Utility through both recovery and internet recovery.

I have backups so I am able to format my drive. Any advice on how to get the volume to recognize the free space would be much appreciated!

Hmm this is a tricky one and my best bet is you have to format the drive and restore the data back.

- Here's what I would do and the least evasive step.
- install Carbon Copy Cloner
- Initiate a clone of Macintosh HD to an unused volume(can be a partition of an external HDD)
- Restart your system and hold down option key on start-up
- This is the tricky part, you need to select the new Macintosh HD volume that was generated by CCC, why tricky? because it's a clone so it's no direct way to tell which drives physically you are booting to. you can use disk utility to confirm after boot.
- now that you are booted onto the new cloned drive, use disk utility to wipe out the internal HDD
- and use CCC to clone it back.

The Yosemite install converted your disk to a core storage volume. Others have reported the same thing.

Run the command below in Terminal to convert it back, then you should be able to manipulate the partitions normally.

diskutil cs revert disk1

I partitioned my drive to install the PB so I may have to refer back to this when I remove it later. Thanks Weaselboy

In the end I used GParted to partition and resize the free space and used Internet recovery to format the drive and install Lion.
