Cannot get old iPhone 4 to log in

Two questions.
1. I can't log into an apple account on my old iphone 4, which is running ios 9. I try to log in, 1000% typing in the right password, it says it sent a message to my other device.
Ok. Check my iphone. Sure enough, shows address of an attempted sign in. I click accept. Then shows me a code.
On my iphone 4 side then idk, it'll just prompt for password. Insert password, prompt my newer iphone again for location. It says I input the 6-digit code, but never actually lets me.

2. Will updating to ios 9 help FOR SURE? 90% of the reason I'm on my iphone 4 is because I want to use ios 9, however. So updating would kind of defeat the purpose. not sure

Try adding that 6 digit code at the end of your password, in the same field as the password.
