OP:

Looking at "the list" (disk utility) in post 2 above...

Did you go to the "view" menu and choose "show ALL devices" ???

If not, DO SO.
Then look at that list again.
When you see the group about the Mac itself, you should also see a new "top line" that shows you the PHYSICAL disk inside.

You need to select the internal SSD itself (top line)
Then, click the erase button.
Erase to APFS, GUID partition format.

Then, quit disk utility and open the installer and start clicking through.

DO YOU HAVE A BACKUP (assuming you might need one)??????
This will wipe out everything on the drive as it is now.

So... MAKE SURE YOU ARE BACKED UP before you erase the drive !!!!!!!

I suggest using SuperDuper.
FREE download.
Very easy to understand and use.
No charge for backing up an ENTIRE drive (as you need to do).

Quality w/ 5-year warranty
I'm glad that you had a good experience with OWC.
Mine experience with their disks wasn't good. I had two customers with total data loss and a third one with random panics after the replacement. That in 5 machines upgraded. Enough sample for me. Never again.

Some searching reveals other people with issues as well.
Third party disks (any brand) have issues of battery drain, troubles with sleep modes and in certain cases, with software updates.

For all of the above, I only use and recommend original disks.

Sorry you've had bad experiences with their SSD products. I've replaced two (Aura Pro NT) for extended family in the last few years (upgrades for more capacity) and they haven't complained. I've also replaced a handful SSD in 2015 MBP (upgrades) some years ago at work and seemed to perform well... but don't know if these ran into issues later as I left the company. I have had some issues w/ OWC enclosures over the years but RMA replacements have worked out.

The Macbook Pro 13" 2017 with function keys (instead of the Touch Bar) has a know problem with the disk that may lead to an early failure.
It's replaceable and you can find it on eBay and Amazon among other places. Buy an original one, instead of a replacement model.

Model 1708, attached the picture of the laptop. Are you sure, the drive not soldered? I can replace it easily? I didn't know.

A1708 with Function Keys have a replaceable disk.
Plenty of videos available, here's one of them:

The tools that you need are mentioned that as well.

I find easy to partially remove the speaker under the disk to replace it (to avoid put any stress on the connector).
