so my hd had nothing on it and i want to put os x 10.3 on my imac and my dvd broke is there a possiblity of getting osx on it with a external dvd and it does not have firewire

umm...they DO make USB dvd drives...here have your pick

but if you're talking about your g3, you're outta luck im afraid

Sorry to say, a G3 won't boot from USB. FireWire drives only.

Might be easiest to replace the optical drive. What kind of external drive do you have that lacks FireWire? Buy a new FireWire equipped external drive, load up your OS, and then return it? Kinda shady, but its a solution.

And the iMac G3 350 doesn't have Firewire, so you can't do a Target Disk Mode from another machine ...
About the only way I can think is to physically remove the hard drive, install it in a USB or Firewire case, and use another iMac which has a DVD to install onto the hard drive, then transplant it back into the machine.

But really, it's doubtful its worth the effort. Apple doesn't officially support OSX on this machine in any case, and the machine is worth relatively little. Reinstalling OS9 may be the best way to go.
