Cannot make phone calls from my Mac but I can receive them

Hi, I'm using an early 17'' MBP with Yosemite and iPhone 5 with iOS8, I am able to receive phone calls on my laptop without problem, but I can't seem to be able to start a new phone call form my Mac (it always shows call failed). I tried signing off and on iCloud in both my devices and switching iPhone Cellular calls off and on in both devices under Facetime, but no dice.


I know handoff isn't supported by this model unless I change the bt/wireless card, but receiving and starting phone calls from my mac should work right? If so how can I fix this?

Ditto here. I've been able to receive since PB1 or 2 (can't remember) but Ive always only been able to receive. Not sure why. I haven't had time to trouble shoot. Honestly, it's the only bug I've had throughout the PBJ, so I guess I'm lucky.

I can receive the calls too, but can't make them. Don't understand why.

I have the same problem on my iPad, don't know if it's supposed to be that way.

Your iphone has to be unlocked and connected to the same network as the computer you're trying to make the phone calls from. Mine works fine. iMac / iPhone 6+

Hello there,

Exactly the opposite is happening to my Macbook.

Although I can start a phone call from my Mac, I don't receive any notifications when the iPhone is ringing, nearby and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

I've tried several options, but noone worked. Both my iPhone and Mac are using the same Apple ID, Celullar calls is set to on on both devices, and notifications are set to receive alerts and ringtones.

But nothing.

Strangely, Messages work flawlessly between the devices.

Any ideas on what could be wrong would be appreciated.

Do I have to have FaceTime ON all the time in both the iPhone and Mac for this Continuity feature to work as advertised?
I still can't figure out whether this os something related to iOS 8 or Yosemite.

But it's annoying. It was the feature I was looking forward to when updating my computer.

The phone does not have to be unlocked, before a call can be placed using the Mac.

I had some issues early on, but they resolved themselves without my doing anything specific. Perhaps was me having to type in my iCloud keychain code 10,000 times in order to get everything synced...

Thank you! I read this article this afternoon... It was exactly the same as my current setup, but nothing yet.

It seems this Continuity feature is somewhat unstable at the moment, as I see a lot of reports from people having trouble with Continuity and/or HandOff setup.

I also think people are CONFUSED about these features. Apple should provide a clear explanation on how to set them up and use them.

So far in the Apple Community Discussions there are tons of unanswered questions regarding Continuity.

Hope tomorrow's iOS 8.1 or the next Yosemite upgrade shed some light into these issues.
