Have had this Macbook Pro M1 for about a year. Just tried to play a DVD and it will not. I can play a CD in iTunes but but not a DVD which plays fine on an older Macbook. OS is Big Sur.

Do I need to find a DVD Player in the App Store? Another solution?

Thanks!

I've played DVDs on an M1 MacBook Air on Big Sur without any trouble. I haven't tried on Monterey since I don't use DVDs much any more.

Edit: You should be able to find the DVD player application in "/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/DVD player"

I found the DVD player where you said I would. And it plays! Now....how do I get the player on my desktop or somewhere else nearby so that it'll be convenient for me to open it? The specific DVD shows in the upper right corner of my desktop but I see nothing seemingly helpful there other than ability to eject the DVD.

Got it! I drug the DVD Player from Finder to my "Desktop" on the left side of that Finder window. Works perfectly!

Thanks so much!

In the process of doing all the above, I've ended up with a new folder on my desktop........"Relocated Items". I click on that folder and it open what appears to be a Finder window and there is a line "What are relocated items?" That then provides and explanation which is far above my pay grade apparently.....makes no sense to me at all. So the DVD player works and I'd just as soon ignore that Relocated Items folder and better yet maybe send it to the Trash. Thoughts? Am I doing anything dangerous here?

"Relocated Items" typically appears after an update, and contains some files that the system cleaned out while it was doing housekeeping. If it's empty except for the "What are relocated items?" text file, feel free to delete it. It just ended up there somehow without any relocated items in it.

I see many files there, most of them some kind of Apple files. None of them mean a thing to me. When I bought this macbook I did a "migration", on the phone with Apple Support, of all contents from the old macbook I was replacing with this one. So maybe those relocated items were created during that process. I tend to delete lots of things but when I don't know what they are I hesitate. I can just leave the folder on my desktop and be done with it, I guess.

If they’ve been relocated, they are no longer necessary. If you don’t see any files that you recognize, then you should be able to delete them safely.
