Setup iPhone and iPad to access home movie files from an iMac, via connect to server. I can now see the files, using either iPhone or iPad, but cannot play them.

Has anyone found a way to play videos in the Files app?

Take a short video clip with your iPhone camera and send it to the Files app on your phone and on iCloud. See if it plays.

If it does (and it should) then there’s something incompatible with the video codec on the videos you’re trying to see on the Files app that won’t play.

VLC app will play almost anything. You could try sending them to the VLC app and see if it can play them.

I took a short video with the iPhone and sent it to the Files app on the phone. It played just fine.

There is a difference in codecs though they are both QuickTime movies.

The phone video is H.264 and the one I'm trying to play from the iMac is DV.

My MacBook plays them via connect to server. Apparently the iPhone is not compatible with DV.

I'd rather not bother with the extra steps of VLC. These videos were captured from Hi8 tape and consist of multiple clips per 2-hour tape.

I see this is almost 3 years old at this point but I was doing some digging for a similar project and it seems like the iMovie app is compatible with the DV format and should be able to view your video that way. I don’t have one to test and maybe you figured that out years ago on your own, but if anyone stumbles upon this and it works it’s good knowledge anyhow.
