cannot read the contents of my mail

hi guys,

I have just reinstalled my operating system OSX 10.3. I updated the mail programme and have the version 1.3.8.

After all these major changes on my computer I placed the information of my mailservers (POP stuff) into the User/library/mail folder. The info I had saved on an external harddrive, so I didn't set up anything newly.

Now when opening the mail apllication, it perfectly retirves the emails from the server and also manages to show whom they are from and the subject line and evrything work fine. It is only that the body message doesn't appear. I tried using different fonts as my default mail fonts but it doesn't help. Only viewing them in the Raw source mode makes the content "accessible".

Do you have any ideas what the problem might be? If so, please let me know (but don't send me an email...;-) bad one, I know....

Does the preview window appear at all? If all you can see is subject line, etc try*clicking and dragging at the bottom of the window--or even double clicking. It's possible that the preview window is being covered up.

yes I actually do have the preview window. It's just always white and empty...

You can try rebuilding your mailboxes - there may be something corrupt (like a bad mail header, etc.) in the mbox files causing your problem.

Highlight the mailbox from the folder list and use the menu: Mailbox -> Rebuild. This re-reads the mbox file and rebuilds it from scratch - you should not lose any e-mail messages by doing so (unless there is something really wrong - so back up your mail mbox files first, just in case). For POP3, your mail is stored locally on the machine (unless you also leave the messages on the server) and rebuilding the mailbox works on your local copy - if you use IMAP, this just rebuilds the local cache of the files that are stored on the mailserver. Side note: in the case of IMAP, rebuilding the mailbox can clear out quite a bit of old cruft (deleted messages, mostly) in the cache, sometimes freeing up 10's of MBytes from your hard drive.

If rebuilding the mailbox doesn't work, try trashing the preferences and re-enter your account information by hand - there may be something wrong with the config file you copied over.

Ok, I have finally resolved it by reinstalling the operating system. Now it works again.

Still, that can't be the solution. Windows Folks do reinstall their system just like that.
But,
I admit I have also had the problem, and I couldn't solve it. So, perhaps we are running into a Bug ( you can replace perhaps by probably, just as you like ;-) ). I am using thunderbird now, and I have to say it got by far more features than the Apple Mail Client, and of course the killing features, "text format" = flowed, and line break after $x (pref. 72) chars.
Anybody got a clearer solution to the whole affair.

Did you trash your mail preferences? user > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist (or something like that).

Betcha if you'd have hit [Apple]+[option]+[ P] you would've got something. Ok, since you've re-installed we'll never know...

It's something that occasionally happens to me. Something to do with displaying Rich Text I think.

o no. it's reoccurred again. i updated my backup operating system on my external firewire drive. there i now have osx 10.3.4, on my harddrive its's 10.3; since the upgrading the mail just behaves as described.

apple option p...interesting approach but don't have a printer. mail preferences, i'll try that.

what is that all about with osx, it seems like a constant deleting of preferences!?

just found out, when i hit the reply button, i can read the mail again. it's just in the normal mail view window where the problems occur. seems like it has to do with plain text and html? removing the preferences from the library didn't work by the way
