So once you format a partition in NTFS (for Windows XP), you cannot touch it any further with OS X? Not even to reformat it?

What if you suddenly cannot boot into Windows XP, and don't have any Windows installations around? Are you SOL?

Only way I can see of reclaiming the space is to format the whole drive, which, of course, means formatting your OS X partition as well.

You can erase it with BC.

Exactly, I've done this several times on my macbook with no data loss. I think that you could also use diskutil to resize it and some other stuff but you would need to use the command-line (if it would even work, not too sure on this).
