I have a mac mini (mid 2010 model) - I stupidly erased the hard drive to hand the mac over to a friend. Now we are unable to reinstall it from a retail disc it just seems to hang - I tried running it from OSX 10.6 from a thumb drive n I got the "You need to restart your computer" message.

Anybody had to do this in the past or have you any suggestions to try and get this working again?

I haven't run into this issue before but I would call tech support if you haven't done so already.

Wow, this issue is appearing more frequently.

OP, you are trying to use a version of SL from the retail disk that isn't supported by your mac mini's current machine (different kernal versions). You need to use the gray/recovery disks that came with your mm, not a retail disk.

If you don't have those disks, you either install Lion or acquire a SL version of at least 10.6.3.
