Cannot Shut Down or Restart normally

After installing Sierra Developer Beta 3 on my MacBook Pro late 2013, I am unable to shut down or restart my Mac normally and I have to force close it by holding down the power button.

When I attempt to shut down or restart, the screen goes black and only the mouse cursor displays and then nothing happens after that.

Any advice on what I can do to remedy this problem?

Try this:

When you're ready to shut down, DO NOT choose "Shut down" from the menu bar.
Instead, choose to log out (or type "Shift/Command-Q").
This will log out the current user and leave you at the log in screen.

At the bottom of the login screen are the options to shut down or restart.
Choose Shut Down from this screen.
Does doing this change anything?

I have the same issue with my MacBook Pro Early 2011. I tried logging out first, then shutting down, but it still hangs. I have verbose mode enabled and it says:
Failed to send exception EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY. error code: 5 for pid 112
Process mds_stores [199] disabling system-wide I/O Throttling
Process mds_stores [199] disabling system-wide CPU Throttling

If I leave this sitting for a while (10 minutes?) it finally shuts down. It did not do this on Public Beta 1 unless I was really not paying attention at all.

I'm going to try some maintenance scripts to see if that helps and I'll post back here if I find an answer.

Do you know what process that was?

Before the next recurrence of the problem, run the following command in Terminal:

top -l 1 > ~/Documents/top.txt

Then when you next start the Mac, you can use that document (top.txt) to tell the process name that related to each process ID number.

@grahamperrin I've tried several times since my last post to figure out which process it was, but each time it does something different. Sometimes it will be a different message on the screen when it hangs, sometimes it will be just a black screen with a white underscore in the top left corner. Since I've been exporting my list of process IDs it hasn't had the EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY error, but it has still been hanging every time I shutdown or restart.

I still haven't tracked it down. I think the messages I was seeing originally were just a coincidence. Whatever it is seems to hang for exactly 10 minutes and then finishes shutting down. Does anyone else have any ideas?

sudo shutdown -r now

Try this in Terminal and see if it shuts down normally. It's better than holding the power button.

Adding to Simon's hint: save all unsaved work before commanding a shut down in that way.

I've tried sudo shutdown, but it doesn't help speed up the process at all. Does anyone else have suggestions?

OK, now start in normal mode and launch Terminal. Be prepared to enter your admin password and enter the following command:

sudo kextstat | grep -v com.apple ; sudo launchctl list | grep -v com.apple

If you share the output of that command (hint: in the forum, format as code) then someone might identify something potentially troublesome that's not from Apple.

@grahamperrin I finally tracked down the issue. Thanks for the guidance. It turns out the version of MySQL (5.7.13) installed on my system isn't compatible with Sierra. After stopping that from starting automatically it no longer hangs when shutting down.

I had the same problem and after disabling mysql autostart in preferences the problem was gone. Thx a lot!
