cannot turn on keyboard illumination

i try to turn up the brightness of my keyboard when dark, by pressing fn + F10 but rather than the little brightness icon comming up and showing me the brightness level, it has a little circle with a line through it. how do i turn keyboard illumination on? also, when i cover the light sensors the screen gets darker, and the keyboard illununation does not come on.

In system preferences->keyboard->illuminate in low-light conditions
just check the box.

I think you've got a flaky keyboard. The shift keys do not seem to work at all and other keys seem intermittent.

you can only adjust it that way if the room you're in is dark enough to enable the keyboard to light up. If you're trying to adjust it in a bright room it's going to show the screen you're getting.

rang apple and got sorted. i had to remove the battery and the power, and hold the power key for 5 secs, to reset the power saving settings. it worked after that
