I did the 2.0.1 update, spent the last hour letting my 1st gen iPhone back up all appeared to go well. Then it did the "preparing to install" BS and so forth. I was struck with the Cannot Update iPhone error 1602. It told me to restore, etc etc, so I did. I was given the "Cannot Restore error 1604".

I have the latest version of iTunes.

I'm unsure where to go from here.
I did the uninstall of itunes and such as directed by this forum and Apple support as well.

Any other thoughts?

The phone was no jailbroken or unlocked. I had nothing custom on it, just some apps I either downloaded or purchased.

Same Problem

I am experiencing the same problem, no matter how many times i go into restore and download files my phone is constantly requesting i restore.
I cannot go into DFU mode, as i said all it request is to restore.
Have tried most of the tricks.
Any assistance would be appreciated

Error 1602 There is some software on your PC which is causing an incompatability. Usually this is anti-virus or firewall software, but it could be 3rd party software. Have you disabled Anti virus and firewall whilst upgrading phone.

I am on a mac.

What I did was deleted the plist files from my library folder and restored on an entirely different computer.

The missing step was you want to make sure you have the latest itunes, SYNC your iPhone, backup your iPhone, then update. The SYNC is the missing piece as it worked flawlessly the second time around.

After I was able to restore using another machine I did lose my so-called backup that was done on my desktop. I don't care much as I have all contacts in my address book and those were backed up. I lost text and pictures but cell phone pictures are typically just throw aways anyway.

Again, the missing, wildly undocumented step is the SYNC before backup.

Once all was well I tempted fate and tried the update again for kicks and it worked without a hitch.
