It probably isn't but it keeps the 3rd party lens makers off-balance, keeping Canon in charge of their lens monopoly.
 
They should have called it the 20Ds, or 20D mkII.

The 30D implies that it made a jump worthy of 2 megapixels and other enhancements. Canon is just too comfortable in their leadership position in the dslr market for them to introduce any true improvements. If they don't have to improve, they won't. Says a lot about the competition.

On another note, I guess the limits have been reached as far as how many pixels can be packed onto a sensor before noise becomes an issue. Nikon looks pretty good with their D200 though. I am in the market for a dslr, and am still confused with who to do with. I'll be shooting my trusting 35mm slide film for now.;)

So just how does a minor (Camera) upgrade keep 3rd party lens makers off-balance?
 
whoo! it's got numerous improvements such as spot metering and a bigger screen...errm...ok. :confused:

*really shouldnt talk about this stuff cause he only has a d50 and is very, very amateur*

Canon generally change the firmware in each body in how it reacts to lenses. Often, third party lenses cannot work with some Canon bodies. Other camera makers don't go out of their way to make their lens interface incompatible.

Looks like the 30D effectively replaces the 20D and comes in under the previous 20D price.

Now that Canon's finally done this I get to start my DSLR shopping in earnest - 30D vs D200.
 
The price of the 30D ($1399) is less than the initial price of the 20D ($1499 i think)... but the 20D now sells for ~$1150.

Canon is going to continue making the 20D for a little while, as the 30D is not a replacement as much as an upgraded version.

I am definitely getting a 30D in about 6 weeks when my birthday rolls around.

...can't wait to be 21

I agree that the improvements don't seem worthy of a "name jump".

As for me, I don't really care about the bigger LCD screen. What I saw in the specifications was (in my personal priority order):

Real Spot metering
10% better battery life
Longer 5fps 'burst' mode (11 RAW).


Thus said, if someone might be interested in paying a good dollar for a barely used 20D, I'd be inclined to move up...just not sure how much its really would be worth to me.

I'm glad this thing was finally announced, I've been wanting a dslr for awhile but wanted to wait until the 20d's replacement was announced so I could decide which to get. This lack of a significant upgrade has pretty much pushed me fully to the 20d, hopefully at a reduced price.

bigbossbmb, do you have any sources for saying that the 20d will continue to be made by Canon? Pretty much everything I've heard (and, who knows how accurate those are) points to Canon just selling out its stock, and not making any more. Yet the 20d is still on Canon's web site, so... who knows.

Of course, their "monopoly" on lenses (for their own camera system) has nothing to do with making top notch lenses (L series anyone?)

Generally not as bad as you paint it. Tamron and Tokina based on my experiences have had few if any "chip" issues. Sigma seems to be the one that this comes up the most often with.
