Canon CAPT printer driver woes

For a long time now I have used a USB-connected Canon LPB3000 mono laser printer. It suits my needs perfectly and I like it, and I want to continue to use it. Problem is that for the last few OSX upgrades I have had to manually remove the driver files, restart OSX, empty the Trash, use a .dmg file from a Canon web site to re-install the driver and then, finally, go to System Preferences to add the printer. This has worked for the last few upgrades, but what a PITA!

Since El Capitan things have gone pear-shaped.

I noticed that there was a newer version of the CAPT driver at Canon (Mac_CAPT_V385_uk_EN.dmg, dated Sept 2015) so I used that and followed the procedure which has worked in the past, but now when I try to add the printer via System Preferences all I see is “No printers are available”.

I have re-set the printer system and re-installed OSX to try to beat the problem. Nothing works.

Is there anyone out there who has managed to get their old Canon laser printer to work with El Capitan (10.11.1)? How did you do it?

Can anyone else offer some helpful advice, PLEASE!!

Thanks Lou, but no mention of my LPB3000 laser as one of the supported devices

^^^^I have an HP LaserJet Printer and a HP DeskJet Color Printer. My LaserJet, a recent model, is not listed on HP's list. My DeskJet is. Both are working with the latest Drivers. Try the latest Canon Drivers, can't hurt.

I have made a "little" bit of progress with this issue: A Canon support engineer here in Australia suggested that I power off the printer and disconnect it from the USB for "about 10 minutes" and in the interim to restart the computer and re-install the driver and then restart again before reconnecting the printer. So I did all and that and hey!! my LBP3000 re-appeared in the list of printers I could add! I don't know why things turned out this way and I really wish I understood how all this stuff works. Anyway, my story still doesn't have a happy ending, because when I send a file to the printer it just hangs in a permanent state of "Printing - Sending data to the printer".

So I'm still looking for a solution.

Meanwhile, I'll try the drivers supplied via Apple. As you say, Lou, it can't hurt.

I'm getting a bit grumpy about how much of my time this is wasting.

Anyone else got a suggestion??

Update - After sleeping on this problem I tried replacing the USB cable, and BINGO!, everything now works as expected. I am so relieved.
