Background:
I'm a photo hobbyist, started with a Canon T1i and kit lens in 2009.
Went thru that learning curve, got 50mm f 1.4 prime, 15-85 zoom and the beast f2.8 70-200 L MkII.
New body in 2014 the 70D with the 18-135 lens, that's a sweet lens, but recently with my kids/other I desire f2.8 in the lower zoom range for good DOF ability and tack sharp images.

Choices:
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM
Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro FX

Article here leads me to get the Canon, what have others here done?

No contest.... the Canon 24-70 is pretty much the benchmark that all other 24-70s are measured against... There are better (sharper) options for other manufacturers (they built their lenses to better the Canon) but in the Canon world, if funds stretch, you cannot go wrong with the 24-70 IMHO. I had one on my 70d a few years ago and loved it.

When I’m not doing architecture the Canon 24-70 2.8II is on my 5DIV 90% of the time. It’s fantastic, but bear in mind that the angle of view will not be very wide with the 70D.

Another very happy 24 70 user. If you can live with F4 the 24 105 is very decent too!
