Hi all

I have no idea about photography/cameras and I am currently visiting australia and I have noticed how bad my camera is so I am looking to get a new one. I read in stuff magazine that these two cameras are the top 1 & 2 on their list. I have enough money to get the canon but do not have enough for an SLR so was looking for the next best thing!

What things should I be looking at to take a good photo?
Is £469 too much for a digital camera?

What's "bad" about your current camera?

Composition, lighting, depth of field...

Depends on what you need your camera to do.

Edit: ^ What he said, basically. (Curses for writing so slowly.)

Looking at Amazon the 1000D is 100£ cheaper than the G11 (and Play.com has the double-lens kit for a couple of tenners more than the G11). It's showing Euro prices for me, though, if that affects it.

What you need to take a good photo is a camera and some understanding of composition; what you could do is try to think what you want that your current camera can't give you and shop according to that.

A less-than-stellar estimation of the Fuji from a site that I tend to trust:

What's your current camera and what do you not like about it? A G11, while good for people accustomed to SLRs, may not be the best choice for someone who claims to have no idea about photography and cameras. The best thing about the G11 (IMO) is its manual controls, which can be overkill for casual users. There are many cameras with comparable image quality in a less bulky and dial-heavy package.
