Most people would say if you bought any lens for Nikon stick with Nikon and if not picking a camera is more of a personal preference, so you won't lose with picking any one of them. I personally went with the T1i cause I love the high res 3.0 screen and how your pictures come out on it.
I love Nikon cameras but I'm buying a T2i because it will take good enough stills for me to progress and experiment, but most importantly it will provide me with incredible video quality. If I was a stills only guy, I would probably have a Nikon.
What are you upgrading from? Do you own any lens (other than kit)?

Well said. OP, your situation is not unique - just use the forum search and you'll have hundreds, if not thousands of opinions on this question.

Try going to a good local camera store and see what is offered in your price range. Also, don't necessarily restrict yourself to Canon and Nikon. Both Pentax and Olympus have some nice cameras to offer at good price points..
When you say "I've always used Nikon cameras", are you talking point and shoots? SLRs? What, exactly? I'm assuming you don't have a library of Nikon lenses, otherwise you wouldn't have asked - so I'm guessing point and shoots. If that's the case, then brand loyalty doesn't really factor in... UNLESS you love (or hate) the camera controls, since sometimes similar layouts are used on a given company's compacts and SLRs.
Try holding these two cameras in your hands, and see what "feels better". Do your friends predominantly own one brand or the other (assuming you've got dSLR-shooting friends)? That could impact your decision because they might be willing to share lenses with you.
Have you shot enough to know what type of photos you like to take? If so, which brand has stronger lens offerings for that type of photography?
I love my Nikon, others love their Canons, either way I expect you'll end up very happy.

I would spend a little more and get yourself a D300 if you do not want the video. There are still some to be had and as with Apple, Nikon refurbs are a good deal. Good Luck & Happy Shooting !!!!

Really? You can get a Nikon D90 from B&H for $779.95 and the Canon EOS Rebel T2i costs $799.95.
But I do agree the D90 is more like the EOS 50D which costs $929.95.
I think the D90 is a great camera that has the traditional Nikon solid feel and quality. The price it sells at now is a steal.

Personally, I'd go for a Pentax K20D, because my first "real" camera was a Pentax K1000 and I've been a Pentax fan ever since.
Aperture fully supports all Pentax SLRS, but if you use other software, the new Pentax cameras can use Adobe's DNG RAW format instead of Pentax's own RAW format. In other words, you won't run into software compatibility problems with a Pentax.

Back to topic at hand... I would suggest Nikon based on what little information you've given, unless you have any particular problems with Nikon. Both will get you great shots, provided you do the work of pointing it at something interesting.

That's about the size of most of these threads. Both companies make great cameras; both companies have strengths, and both have weaknesses. There are great lenses available for both systems.
If you have a significant investment in Nikon AF lenses, you should strongly consider a Nikon DSLR unless you have a reason to switch.

I quoted retail prices. T2i just came out so it is selling at retail. D90 is 1.5 years old, soon to be replaced with something more modern.

Really it makes no difference, if you have any Nikon lenses that you spent good money on then stick to Nikon.
Personally I like Canon's lens line up better than Nikkor, but in all fairness both are pretty equal.

I prefer Nikon's as they use ED glass at their low-end. You have to go with Canon L at the higher end to get nicer lenses (though Canon's got some good lenses at their low end, put I prefer Nikon's "low end").
If the OP has Nikon lenses already - keep those and use them on the Nikon. Old manual focus lenses are worth some money and take really nice pics (I had a few Nikon and was disappointed I sold them next to nothing and could've used them).
