When I used to reformat my vista machine, I simply copied my email folder before doing so, then after the os install simply changed the store folder in windows mail and it would pick up all my emails/folders.

However, I've tried to do that via vmware and virtualbox, but it (windows mail) keeps giving me an error, saying that the folder is in use by another program such as a virus checker.

Am I going to have to go down the bootcamp route to get all my emails? Or can I get them via vmware/virtualbox somehow? Anyone managed it?

Yes. I installed Windows 7 RC via bootcamp, and I use VMware Fusion 2 to virtualize my bootcamp partition.

I use thunderbird as my email client, and it works perfectly.

Maybe you can try Windows7?

How different is it to virtualise your bootcamp partition as opposed to normal virtualisation? Does it run better?

I also tried W7 but I get the same thing - think it's because there are too many emails (over 3GB).
