Can't access secure sites using Safari

I've found that I like Safari the most out of the Mac browsers. However, I cannot access any secure sites (https sites), whether they be signing into sites such as geocities.com or buying stuff over the net (can't even access Apple's Mac OS X Up-to-date page!)

When I click the link, Safari (1.0, Jaguar 10.2.8) tries to load but fails after 60 seconds. This is really annoying, especially as Internet Explorer and Camino 0.7 load the pages without any problem.

I'm wondering if my uni ethernet firewall settings are interfering with Safari. Presumably Safari gets its settings from the Network preferences, not its own proprietry preferences. Problem is, I don't know much about proxy settings, and my uni is Windows-only, so provides no support for Macs. Will the "reset Safari" option fix this do you think? (If I do this, what file do I need to back up first to save all my settings in the case it doesn't work?)

HTTPS requests use port 443 unless it is manually configured for a different one. If you can use a different browser, you know that port is open. Can you access it with the FW?

I was told to put my network settings to ports 8080. I changed the "secure web proxy" port to 443 but it didn't make any difference.

What is the FW?

That's odd, I have had no problems with secure sites other than my companies exchange server portal in which I use explorer. Banking, orders and all that work just fine.

I've found some information on my uni website which says there is a known bug in Safari 1.0 which Apple is currently trying to fix. It describes the exact problem I have, so I just have to wait it out. I will send another bug report myself to Apple about this so hopefully they will fix it sooner rather than later!

They make it sound like it affects everyone using Safari, but this can't be the case because no-one else on these boards appears to have any problems!
