I backed up my contacts by ssh'ing into my phone and backing up the files in this directory: /private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook

When I restored and re-added the files my contacts show up but I can't add or modify them...any ideas?

iTunes will back up your contacts each time you sync, then you wouldn't have this issue.

Thats what happens when you try to make easy things hard.
Nothing more simple than syncing thru itunes.

Is there a way to restore only my contacts with itunes. I don't want to restore my calendar and settings...is that possible?

Prior to that you'd have to sync your contacts to your address book or many other apps that will except your contact list. And from there go to itunes while having the iphone plugged in. Click the info tab/sync contacts with/ all contacts
And then you can choose to transfer/save them in outlook, windows contacts, google contacts or yahoo address book
Uncheck calendars right below it so nothing syncs thru that.

He's got two threads going and I believe he doesn't have contacts on his iPhone. I could be wrong, but he added his post to someone with that problem.

Interesting, so he got it on a previous backup but nothing on his phone?

Thanks everyone. I got it fixed.

Almost, I had the contacts file. When I restored with ssh I could not add to my contacts.

I didn't realize I could sync with my windows address book as I never was able to as I never found windows address book in windows 7. In windows mail my contacts they aren't even the same as the ones on my phone. As a result I was stuck.

So I took angies advice and tried to sync with windows address book and it worked....but I still have no idea where the contacts are stored...
