You are trying to send an email with an attachment from within your browser? Which? Safari? Firefox?
Or are you talking about Apple’s mail program included with MacOS? Which version of MacOS?

First you should update MacOS Big Sur.

But my Macbook is also quite new and it have no problems attaching files in an email???
And it runs Big Sur 11.0.1? Anyway, it’s probably wise to update the iMac first.

Then try holding down the Shift key while you open/start up the Mail app.

After it started write a new Mail and try to attach something.
