Hi all,

I am trying to backup my iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) to a MBP 16” and for some reason, it just won’t work. I am backing up using finder, encrypted backup to MBP and it is showing as if it is backing up but I get an unknown backup with a 2001 date and cannot restore that to another iPad.

I have tried everything I can think of and really need this backup to restore to an 11 pro I use for music writing and playback.

Any help on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

Have you tried backing it up using iCloud?

Thanks AutomaticApple, backing up to iCloud wouldn’t be suited for what I need. Too many large files and data to transfer, so I need the backup on the MBP.

Have you tried deleting the failed, likely corrupted backups and forced it to create a new one?

Is the iPad connected to the MBP though Wi-Fi, a hub, or other indirect connection? Or a direct wired connection?

Those are the simple things I'd try first.

Hi, I did indeed try deleting the corrupt backup but got the same result. The iPad is connected directly to the MBP with the original usb C cable, I did also try another cable but got the same result..

It looks similar to the issue described in the following thread, but sadly, no resolution was posted ...

Hi BasicGreatGuy, actually, I just tried using iTunes on a PC, as the other user in the thread I posted, and was able to backup the 12.9 and restore to the 11 with no issue whatsoever!

it would be good to know what the issue is though, as very frustrating being unable to backup using OS X - Finder ...

Glad you found a solution, but ironic that it involves a PC, which can still handle app management, can it not?

I'm still running Mojave, and don't plan to update until I have to, so I haven't discovered the joys of Catalina's device handling, or sometimes lack thereof.

Plus one for iAmazing. Apart from any issues it may solve it’s a much more robust backup system than either the iTunes or finder methods.
