I purchased an iPhone 8 about a month ago. Today while cleaning it with the cloth supplied with my iMac I noticed it has a scratch right on the right edge of the screen! After a closer inspection I also found scratches on its back near its edges. I have no idea how the scratches got there because I'm extra careful with it to the extent that I always clean off the dust on any surface I lay it on. Disappointment is the only word that comes to mind. Moreover, Apple claims the phone's surface is oil repellent but actually the phone acts as the opposite. I have the space gray version and I guess I've never seen such a powerful fingerprint magnet! Before switching to the iPhone I had a Samsung Galaxy with Gorilla glass which I used for 1.5 years and it didn't have one scratch when I resold it and was much less of an oil magnet than this iPhone. I feel like I've been fooled by Apple... Disgusting!

The scratches have been an issue in newer iPhones especially 8,8+ and X

The scratches are microscopic and it will only come under lime light if u throw flash light at it ot use bright light

I’ve a space grey iPhone as well and I’ve scratches at the back
I wipe it every week with a microfibre cloth and still got scratches

Really this year Apple screwed up in battery they’re throttling and strongest glass on a smartphone is neither shock resistant and prone to scratches even at utmost care

You should’ve have put a thin case and a screen protector on it and it wouldn’t of scratched. Look into an Apple leather case. They are very thin and give you a good grip to the phone to.

Micro scratches are common. The scratches usually happen from mirco pieces of sand that are found in most folks pockets. Screen protectors are a must with cells phones to avoid these types of scratches.

Yes fortunately the scratches are only visible directly under and close to a source of light like a light bulb.
I hate to use cases I think it totally ruins the design of the phone.
I think Apple should have used more resistant materials... For the price tag this phone that's what I would expect. Unbelievable that a (lot cheaper) Samsung with Gorilla glass is more resistant than Apple's flagship and ultra-expensive phone.

Aren’t the micro scratches on the oleophobic coating and not the glass itself? I could be wrong though...

Probably but still look bad nonetheless and no way to fix them that I know of.

Agreed.

Doesn't make it the scratches go away of course... just that it's not an issue with the glass being durable enough like the OP is thinking it is.

It’s glass it’s gonna scratch either get a case and protector or deal with scratches it’s that simple. Oh and it’s the same glass as Samsung’s have.

Being blunt, but stop trying to examine every little scratch under direct light and angles on your iPhone. You're literally looking For every imperfection. Phones are subject to wear, Find a suitable case that would prevent further scratches is your only option now. Enjoy the phone for what is.

I’m seeing a lot of complaints on this issue this year. Wonder what changed that these scratches are so prevalent? I immediately put on a screen protector and a slim TPU type case on my phones so I have experienced this on my 8+ so far. However, I do know that even tiniest pieces of whatever can get in and potentially do damage. I’ve noticed red glitter specks here and there from 2 weeks ago so I definitely know anything is possible. All you can do is be mindful, but unfortunately stuff happens.
