I have tried holding down 'D' while booting and it didn't work. I tried 'C' and it didn't work. I don't know what else to do to get this thing to boot from the disc. Any suggestions?

OK, let's rule out the basics first.

Does the disc mount okay if you insert it after OS X is booted?

Do you have the right disc? I see that you also have a G5, and all those Apple DVDs start to look the same after a while...

You're using the MacBook's internal keyboard?

When you hold down C or D, does the MacBook pause and attempt to load from the disc, or does it go immediately to the HD as if a DVD was never there?

Yes, it's the correct disc.
Yes, it mounts fine.
Yes, internal keyboard.
No, I don't notice any pause.

I think it has something to do with the Open Firmware Password. I don't know how to change it or remove it. I installed Undercover theft protection on it when I got it and they recommended setting the Open Firmware Password to prevent someone from just reinstalling OS X. Now I need to boot from the disc to use the Hardware Test, and I cannot. Also, what if I need to reinstall OS X? Then what? I'm so irritated right now.

Plus my dog is whining, but I JUST TOOK HIM OUT!!!

This is kind of a hail mary pass, but you can try clearing out the PRAM (restart, hold down apple-optoin-P-R, wait for the chime to play a few times, then let go).

There have been a few reports recently of bad discs shipping with Macs, so that possibility isn't out of the question. Did this disc ever let you boot before, or is the first time you've had the need to try it?

[Edit: Oh, you have an OF password set? Okay. To kill that, remove a RAM module (changing the amount of total RAM is the bypass). On the first boot with changed RAM amount, reset the PRAM as above.]

[edit: And if you do remember the password, you should be able to disable it from within OS X, from the same password utility you used to set it.]
